First JLC: Master Calendar

So this is still a bit surreal but after being completely surprised by my wife for my 35th birthday...and a couple of trips to the JLC boutique in Boca Raton, I am the proud owner of this lovely time piece. It was a tough choice between the MC and the MUT but ultimately, the added complication and the case shape on the MC just fits my personality/ lifestyle better. Being a WUS and someone who looks for value, I usually end up buying watches from trusted sellers but there is something to be said for the experience of walking into a store and walking out with a new watch on your wrist.

Logo etched on glass... Navy Seals alarm incursion

Folks... Considering buying the special edition Navy seal alarm incursion edition. The logo and name appears to be etched on glass as opposed to on the dial.
What are the pros and cons of this approach? I think you lose the inside AR coating with this approach.. How much of a difference is that?

Any other brands/models that have gone this route?

Thx in advance

Hello WUS,

it's been awhile since I been here last. I'm looking at pulling a trigger on 1 or even 2 pieces of JLC. (seems the prices has dropped here in US due to weaker Euro I'm assuming) In any case, anyone got an AD they can recommend in the East Coast??

Thanks all in advance,

Wolf

Reverso rough glide/slide after service!

First, my stupidity, my wife's Reverso Shadow wound endlessly, I figured the mainspring was broken. AD is a bit far from me. Took it to a Rolex watch maker with certificate from Rolex.
I was apprehensive about those that don't work on Reverso case but my stupidity got the best of me.
I agreed to have him fix it. He has certificate from others such as Cartier and Omega as well.

I believe he replaced the mainspring. When I got it back the case is no longer slide smoothly, I really had to exert force with both thumbs to slide the case. Don't know what happened.

For those that own a reverso, never allow a watchmaker that is not familiar or has worked on the Reverso touch your watch. I think this watch maker, despite all the training and certificates is just not knowing how to dissemble and reassemble the Reverso.

Now i I am stuck with it, I don't want to have him touch it again. I don't want him to do more damage to the watch.

Anyone wear a JLC Master Control as an everyday watch (i.e., with casual clothes)?

I'm mulling a purchase of a 37mm Master Control but wonder about its versatility. Does anyone wear one daily, or should it really be reserved for dressier situations? This isn't about a question of "what's proper" so much as asking whether it goes from being an elegant watch when dressed up to more of a fuddy-duddy watch when dressed down. Or does it have a strong enough personality to be versatile in all situations? I'm weighing this against a sports watch instead as my daily wearer (it's not similar at all, so I won't make an inane this-or-that thread!).

My 1st JLC (vintage)

Hi guys,

I've always had a soft corner for JLC's. With my recent interest in vintage watches, I was looking to acquire a simple time only piece and picked up this French market JLC. I realize this isn't the best picture as it looks a lot better in person but this is all I have for now.

Some basic info:
- Believed to have original dial, hands, movement (as mentioned by Zaf Basha as well)
- Calibre 469A
- 31mm stainless steel case

While I'm still getting used to the watch size, I definitely think this little piece has a charm all its own.

What do you think? Any thoughts on it's market value?

Thanks

Jury's still out on whether or not the size is going to be a deal-breaker, but this is without a doubt an amazing piece. Conceptually it's everything I've been chasing in a "one watch," so why does it feel so much larger than my old 39mm Master Control?

JLC Master Ultra Thin Date Lug Width

Dear all, I have ordered my very first JLC and it is a Master Ultra Thin Date (1288420) and it would arrive in the next couple of weeks.

Do any of you know what is the lug width for this watch? And I have very thin wrists (6"), I just wonder if the standard strap would fit me.

Cheers,
Ivan

JLC depreciation - where?!!

So, I'm relatively new to WISsing and have always wanted a JLC, specifically a dress watch featuring at least a moon or calendar complication. Being new I've yet to venture into the secondhand market on any brand--AD discount or gray only--and thus always only saw prices above my ceiling (semi-arbitrarily set around 5K).

Then I read that JLCs are notorious for depreciation, and began salivating. The model I'm currently lusting after is the SS MUT Moon, which has been around for over 5 years now and grays unworn for about 6.5K. So it must be available secondhand for well under 5, right?

Well, maybe I'm not looking in the right places but I can barely find any used stock, and the few that are out there go for at least 6. Where do these marked-down JLCs all hang out? Or is the JLC universe just too small to be that liquid, especially regarding a single model?

Hi guys,
A client offered me a really nice JLC watch that I never saw and I couldn't find it online.
Can you please take a look and let me know if you know something about it...
Thank you for your time!

An unexpected purchase, and now a happy owner of his first JLC!

After my last watch purchase in December 2016, I promised myself that I won't be looking at new watches for awhile as I was quite happy with my small collection.

However as most of us here will know, when it comes to this hobby, things do not always go according to plan. In the short span of the last 3 weeks, I happened to chance upon two too-good to pass up deals.

Anyway here I am posting pics of my first JLC which I got at an extremely good deal and it is also quite mint for a 10 years old piece.

The watch is currently not with me as I sent it to JLC to do a complete servicing immediately after I bought it. For peace of mind as it is a 10 years old piece.

Now I am just looking forward to receiving it back from the spa spanking new and sparkling!

For several years I had been researching watches and finally settled on the JLC Master Ultra Thin Moon. I couldn't be happier with my purchase - it keeps exceptional time (so far no more than +/- 1s per day!).

This thread has NOTHING to do with a JLC watch...but earnest opinions are most welcome!

Hi guys!
I am facing a huge horological 1st world problem/conundrum that for the first time, doesn't involve me directly.

My wife's significant birthday is looming up ahead and i'm looking to purchase something extra special for her this year.

The reason why i'm posting here is to glean the balanced opinions of a community of enthusiasts here which i believe to be appropriately shaped by
years of watch-collecting experience and highly evolved tastes. I mean, c'mon, we all love JLC because it's just so contrarian and underdog to the likes of Patek and Vacheron right?
I refrain from posting on at least 2 other sections to avoid 1)biased 2)snobby 3) potential stereotyped "Rolex is the best!" fanboy-type of opinions.

Before anything, some profiling of her small watch collection. In her possession are the JLC 822 Reverso, a Cartier Tank solo (not too dissimilar from the 822), and a Frederic Constant slimline in steel, and a heirloom Favre Lubre in WG.
Not too long ago she had a Rolex GMTII ceramic which i sold off as i felt that it had too much of a "boyfriend" watch vibe on her.

Carefully considered, i have narrowed the choice down to either a:
1) Rolex Day Date (leather band)
2) Lange Saxonia Thin 37mm.
Both are within budget after a year or so of rather hard work, and of course with a bit of help from a regular dealership. Now on to the main debate in my head.

I chose the Rolex DD as one candidate because it's ageless design and lasting appeal seems completely apt adorned on her wrist. I firmly believe that as years pass, this watch will age beautifully in commensurate.
It is also easy to service, and the otherwise generic movement does not appear to be too delicate or "finicky". It's just plain reliable. Whoever heard of a new rolex giving problems? The main issue with the DD is that it's far too recognisable and would draw unnecessary attention. It fits the description of an item of conspicuous consumption perfectly. Nevermind the price, its bound to make we weep a tear or two.

The Lange on the other hand, represents something completely different that neither of us possess currently. The dial of the Saxonia Thin is pure and best of all, ultimately discreet, a feature that i have learned to appreciate after almost a decade of dalliances with large sports watches. It is a feature that certainly enhances the wearer's elegance in a subtle way. And if you are in the know about Lange, this 37mm entry-level represents one of the best "bang for buck" in modern horological times. Comparing thin dress watches across the board with Vacheron, Piaget, Chopard, and Patek, these would cost at between 25-50% more than the Lange. So the Lange kind of makes sense.

The small hesitation i have with the Lange is my lack of experience with such a high manufacture. After poor personal experiences with the AP cal. 3120 (and numerous stories of collectors with problems with their APs), I have developed this unshakable fear that more complicated or "haute" movements are a perfect set-up for potential technical issues down the road. I need a sure thing for this much coin, but am i worrying too much about the cal.L093.1? Is a comparison with recent poor QC at AP even fair? Too many reviews sing praises about this and that watch being a brilliant piece of engineering prowess, but they NEVER disclose the problems one may encounter. So to me, the more distilled, the better. I don't even need a damn date. And hey, i can actually read the time off this one without squinting!

I do not intend to buy her too many more expensive watches so let each one count. I sound like i'm making the purchase based on my personal criteria, but trust me, the wife is a complete clueless on such matters.

I'll be checking for responses every other day, but if there is any key information that i have not yet provided, do voice it out and i will attempt to clarify. Any (constructive) advice is welcome.
Thank you gentlemen.

Hi all. I'm looking at a vintage Memovox and have a hard time determining if it's real or fake. It looks real to me but I can't recognize this dial. Would really appreciate your sharp eyes on this.

Greeting! AND looking for some help/guidance

I've been in possession of what I assume is a ladies' Le Coultre watch for most of my life. My Step-father brought it back with him from Switzerland at the end of World War 2, where he was in the Signal Corps. He gave it to me to wear since I have extremely small wrists.

I've searched through photos of many Le Coultre watches but have never found this particular one. I put a space between the Le and the Coultre since that's what's on the watch and I also know French. :-) Specifically, I'd love to know if anyone can identify the watch, give a guess at its age and value, and suggestions on what to do with it. Unfortunately but not surprisingly for a watch that must be at least 70 years old, it does not work. As you can see, the crystal is quite unique and original.

Thanks for any help you can lend me.

Tom

Looking to purchase a vintage piece and found this. They say the bumper is L & K 10k gold filled. Did the older JLC's of this model come with L & K gold filled bumpers? Thank you for your insight in advance!
