Master Calendar Moon Phase vs Reverso Grande Calendar

Hi, Long time reader and visitor of Watchuseek but recently joined and this is my first post. I searched around the JLC thread and did not see any discussions around these watches together so let me know if I am out of place here.

I am looking to purchase my first JLC in the next couple weeks. I started my search looking at triple dates with a moon phase complication. I first came across the Master Calendar Moon Phase (Q1558420) and fell in love. At first I was considering the plain dial vs meteorite dial (Q1558421) and went to see it in person.

At the store I decided against the meteorite dial but learned about the Reveso Grande Calendar (Q3758420), available with the same complications I was looking for. So I went to the store to decide between the traditional and meteorite dial, but left the store having to decide between the reverso and the Master Calendar Moon Phase.

There is not much of a price difference between the two models. I like the concept of being able to flip over the watch and admire the display back with the watch still on my wrist but I have never had or been into rectangular dials.

Any thoughts on...Will the rectangular, tank style grow on me? Is a rectangular watch harder to read? How long will it take to get used to? Anything significantly different about the movement quality/history of the two watches I should consider beyond the aesthetics? Do people wear the watch with the movement display out? Would it be hard to trade if I change my mind?

Right now I am leaning toward the Master Calendar Moon Phase but am interested in what JLC owners have to say. I'll attach stock pictures for those that are not familiar with the models.
Thanks for your insight, MH

With SIHH about a month away, I recently read that it was the 85th Anniversary of the Reverso. This has put a definite halt on my search to pick up another reverso. What do you guys think is on the reverso horizon? When do you expect to find out?

Just Acquired Vintage JLC

Hi All,

Just wanted to share a recent acquisition, and my first JLC- vintage power reserve from around 1950. I'm in London for a while, and so have been poking around vintage dealers when time allows: and then I stumbled across this beauty...will post better pictures later. Obviously refinished, but I love the look- and it will hopefully be good for another 50 years or so.

I'm keen to change the strap- so if anyone has tips on a place to source 16mm straps, please let me know.

Thanks

Remi

Basic mechanism question

Hello people on JLC forum, this is my first post on the forum! I've recently received my first JLC, Grande reverso calendar, and been running some tests to see if watch is working all good. On JLC website, it says that this watch use JLC Calibre 843 and here is my question. When I was setting the time, minute hand was still moving forward (at regular pace at how minute hand moves) even with the crown out. Is this normal? Watches I had before had minute hand stuck in position while the crown is out, and was wondering if there is something wrong or it has something to do with manual wind mechanism (all I had until now was auto). Thanks.

About to buy a Master Control Chrono. Is it authentic?

Hello,

My name is Bruno, I live in Begium and I have 3 Breitlings which I bought new from an AD these last 10 years. A few years ago, Breitling launched the Transocean Chrono which I liked a lot. Then I discovered the JLC MCC wich is a fantastic watch. I found a second hand one from 2011 (black face with white date window) at a very good price and the shop would buy my Breitling Blackbird at a good price too. I will go and see it next week-end and will probably buy it. It has apparently never been worn.

Could you please let me know from these 2 pictures if it's authentic ?

I hope my post is OK for the moderator. If not, just let me know and I will edit it.

Thanks,
Bruno

Master Ultra Thin Moon Black

Just thought I'd share/create a discussion.

Went into the JLC authorised dealer in London the other day. First off there was fantastic customer service, gave us mulled wine and mince pies!!! Secondly I saw the ultra thin moon in black and fell in love. It's majestically elegant and the sunburst dial just draws me in. Definitely saving up for this beauty.

What do you guys think/ what are your favorite JLCs?

The price is right game on a P478?

Hey all,

Thinking of adding this to my collection, but curious about your thoughts on figured we could make it fun with a bit of the price is right, to see if it's worth the asking. What would you guess the price to be on this piece (or maybe what would you pay)?

Black dial P478 1950's-ish Jaeger Lecoultre, pic below. Would love to hear any thoughts/concerns you might have/see when evaluating this piece.

Many thanks!

Inputs needed vintage Master Mariner E557

I will really appreciate the inputs of forum members concerning a watch that I have inherited. Relevant details that I can supply (not sure that all stated is 100% correct):

Made in the 1960s. Center-seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel wristwatch with date. Model E557/1.
Three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back. D. Satiné silver with applied steel square indexes, aperture for the date. Luminous steel baton hands. M. Cal. K 883 (maybe a K881?), rhodium-plated, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock absorber, self-compensating flat balance-spring. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 34 mm. Thickness 12 mm.

In very good working condition. Serviced a year ago and has not even worked 10 hours since, new glass was also fitted. Watch body and strap needs a polish; knowing little about watches I will rate it as good to very good. Keeps perfect time. Strap is original JLC. Original case, warranty, instruction manual & sale papers included, all in fine condition.

According to my info, four types of this Master Mariner were made. Apparently this is the very scarce one with the Jaeger LeCoultre name (plate) placed where the 9 should be on the face. The face is also "darker" on the one half. This is what Jaeger LeCoultre itself states about the watch: "Regarding the dial, this specific model had a total of four different dials which includes the one with the plate at nine o'clock".

Kindly assist with the following:

1. Is this a K883 or a K881
2. Any comments re the scarcity of this watch? I have checked on the net for roughly three now and could find only ONE similar watch where the JLC name is on a plate at nine o'clock. I did manage to find a number of Master Mariners which I assume are from the other three type of dials in this particular series; where the JLC name is stated at the top of the face (on my watch the words "Master Mariner" are stated at the top. But apart from the one with a plate at nine I found (it sold in 2008 for $1 500 but had no s/s JLC strap or box with any papers), I could not get any other info or pics on this particular watch. It seems to be very scarce indeed.
3. Approximate valuation figures by forum members (though I know it is not binding) will be highly appreciated, as I would like to establish the value for insurance purposes.

Your advises will be highly appreciated!

Reverso Strap Size Conundrum

$

So I pulled the trigger on a US Limited 1931 Reverso but the offering was without the Casa Fagliano strap. I'm in the process of ordering one but I'm nervous about the size. The standard alligator strap that the Reverso comes with fits a little loose. I have one more notch to go before it's as tight as it gets but I think the strap looks kind of weird when all that extra strap is hanging out. My wrist is right around 7 inches.

Has anyone ordered a Casa Fagliano short strap? Is it a lot shorter? I know the measurements are 110x65mm as opposed to their standard 120x80mm but I have no idea how that plays out on the wrist. Not sure what to do.

What watch is that? Are you talkin to me?

Hello all,

just purchased a new JLC grand master ultra thin 40mm. Great looking watch but don't understand why it runs over 10s per day fast given its supposed 1000hr test. Before I go back to the AD does anyone know what I should expect as JLC don't seem to publish a standard?

thanks

Seeking advice on a trade Master World Geo for Reverso Grand GMT

$

Hi All,

would appreciate the advice from those who have had either/both watches.

i have had a wonderful Master World Geo in Steel for the last 3 years, but i bought it because they didnt have the Reverso Grand GMT (steel)in stock. I have come across a used one for sale, and am seriously considering a trade. The RGGMT is physically/cosmetically in good shape, though the strap could do with changing.

however, the RGGMT has apparently never been serviced since purchase in 2008, so I highly suspect a JLC service will be in order (or would you trust a non-service centre to do so?). The shop estimates it to be running 17s fast.

I know that if I buy the RGGMT the MWG will get very little wrist time, so owning both is not really feasble.

What would people do? Trade? Or not?

Hi All,

I have a JLC Reverso Duo 270.840.544 on the way. It is my first Reverso and I am very much looking forward to it. It currently has the OEM black strap on it, but I tend toward brown.

Any Recommendations? Should I stick with OEM, or go to an aftermarket?

I'll post pictures when it arrives.

Thanks in advance for your input!
