What's up with the "29 1/2" on older Master Moon?

I love the 140.8.98.s Master Moon, but I'm trying to figure out the logic in the labels on the seconds dial.
Why does it go from 0 to "29 1/2"? When I first saw this, I thought it must be some really cool flyback mechanism and the flyback took 1/2 second, so therefore the upper edge of the seconds range would be 29 1/2. but it's just a regular sweep seconds subdial... so why didn't they just label it from zero to 30 seconds if they felt the bottom of the subdial display was too crowded for other labels?
Thanks for any insight!
