Help identify inherited JLC (1940s?)

A friend of mine recently inherited this poor condition, but very beautiful JLC gents watch, from his late grandfather. He believes it is from the 1940s.

I will press him for a few more details and some better photos, but wanted to post this image straight away to see if any enthusiasts or experts on here could shed some light. He'd be interested to know the model, date, etc.

He has expressed an interest in restoring the watch, depending on the cost (he is not a collector) in the future, so if anyone can recommend a good independent service in the UK who might be able to handle this, or might know the typical charge JLC would levy for such a comprehensive job, I am sure he would be very grateful for advice.

I should add, I am aware that JLC will look up to details if he sends them the caseback number. He has already asked them, but they have quoted 250 EUR just to look in the archives, so he is keen to find out what he can through other channels first.

Thanks very much for giving this your time.
